Under the Radar: Valentin Firsoff Shabaeff

Valentin Shabaeff (b. 1891), a Russian artist active in Canada from 1930 until the 1980s. The artist’s career centered on Slavic folkloric and its Eastern icon traditions. As the Museum has among its holdings a Shabaeff example of a sacred ceramic tile of a Mother of God we have taken the occasion to display it in a show that privileges this artist’s ceramic tile production along with quintessential examples held in Quebec public and private collections.
