Press release

The Musée des maîtres et artisans du Québec presents the exhibition “Laurent Craste, 20 ans de carrière : variations & digressions” from January 16 to March 10, 2019. This exhibition presents some fifteen ceramic works by Laurent Craste from the Museum’s permanent collection, in addition to one of his performance videos. In 2017, the internationally renowned artist donated these works to the Museum, which have since been recognized as “of outstanding interest and national importance” by the Canadian Cultural Property Export Review Board. This exhibition takes a look back at the career and career of the ceramist and great contemporary artist Laurent Craste.

Since 1999, when he held his first private exhibition, Laurent Craste has constantly revisited the history of ceramics and made unique readings of it. From the Greek vase, which he deeply personalized and “animated”, to the Sèvres-inspired vases whose majesty is disturbed by a tool or instrument, he has pursued a critical re-reading of the ceramic work. This native Frenchman, after extensive training in veterinary medicine, moved to another field and continent to study ceramics at the Bonsecours Ceramic Centre in Montreal. He then obtained a master’s degree in visual arts from the École des arts visuels et médiatiques de l’UQAM. This dual training will give him the technical means and knowledge necessary to transform ceramics into a tool for reinterpreting history. The works on display make the artist’s evolution palpable: from the reconsideration of antiquity to the skinning and flattening of the ceramic vessel. A deeply original and highly innovative journey that has enabled him to show his works in a dozen solo exhibitions and some sixty group exhibitions, including prestigious venues such as the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the Museum of Moving Image in New York and the Cité de la mode et du design in Paris.
